Police have been called to a fresh report of activities linked to hare coursing in Suffolk.

The most recent happened on Saturday around the area of Fakenham and Kirton, near Felixstowe.

Police were called at about 10am by a local gamekeeper and farmers after they spotted two men with dogs.

The men, aged 70 from Hampshire and 32 from Berkshire, were stopped by officers as they were making their way back to their vehicle. In a separate incident, on November 30, officers were called to a farm on Badingham Road, Framlingham, after four men were seen with lurcher-type dogs in a field to the north of the B1119.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said witnesses reported seeing the men attempting to flush out hares.

Officers attended and spoke to a 22-year-old from Bradford, a 17-year-old from Wickford and a 42-year-old and a 33-year-old, both from Basildon. And in a third incident, on November 18, police also attended Marsh Lane, Felixstowe, close to the golf club, and spoke to three men aged 21, 46 and 22, and all from the Hampshire area.

In all three incidents the men were reported to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The CPS will now consider the offences and, if deemed appropriate, will issue them with a notice for when they should appear in court.

  • I certainly hope that our new Police and Crime Commissioner commits to providing an adequate budget to prevent and detect wildlife crime in the county.
