Children from Mistley Norman Primary School have been learning the science behind baking at a nearby manufacturer of ingredients.

Edme welcomed the pupils as part of National Science and Engineering Week and showed them the secrets behind growing, harvesting and malting of grain as well as the milling of flour and the making and baking of bread.

Student Rebekah Paulley said: “I was surprised to find out that there were so many machines in the factory and how big they were. They were very impressive!” Emily Donelley added, “Looking at the machines and seeing what they do made me want to know more about engineering.”

Peter Tichbon, managing director of Edme, said: “The children really saw just how varied and exciting careers in science and engineering can be. They were quite struck by the fact that here in Mistley we’re producing the flours, flakes and ‘bits’ that go into bread all over the country and around the world.”
