THE thaw over the weekend brought more problems to areas of Suffolk in the wake of the big chill.

With melting snow lying on saturated ground, the rise in temperatures led to flooding in some parts of the north and middle of the county.

The Environment Agency issued flood alerts – warning people to be aware of potential dangers – for areas near the Chediston River at Halesworth, the Rattlesden River at Combs Ford, and the Wrentham watercourse between Southwold and Lowestoft. There was also a warning for the River Colne from Castle Hedingham to upstream of Halstead in north Essex.

Flooding led to the closure of the A145 in Brampton and at Weston, south of Beccles. The A144 in Bungay was also closed, but later reopened.

One road closure which was not blamed on the heavy rain was at Rushmere Street, just outside Ipswich.

The road was closed by the county council at the request of Anglian Water after they suffered a burst water main under the carriageway.

Elsewhere a spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said there had been a couple of incidents of people getting stuck in water, but they had managed to get themselves out.

The fire service was not called out to any flooding incidents in Suffolk and there were no reports of any injuries or substantial damage to property from any flooding in the county.
