Suffolk and north Essex basked in sunshine yesterday as temperatures soared to almost 70F – but do not expect the warm weather to last for long.

Temperatures reached nearly 20C across the county on the warmest day of the year so far, with Santon Downham in north-west Suffolk recording the region’s hottest temperatures at 19.3C (66.7F).

Chris Bell from East Anglia-based Weatherquest said the area was benefitting from warm air brought up from the Spanish coast.

But while the rest of the week is likely to stay dry, a band of cloud coming down from Scotland will see today’s temperatures hover around a much more seasonal 12-13C (54-55F).

Mr Bell, a weather forecaster at Weatherquest, which is based at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, said: “It’s not a record either – there have been warmer days in March, as you tend to get warmer days towards the end of the month.

“It’s in the top end of the scale, though – this is about as hot as you get at this time of year.

“(Yesterday) you were talking upward of 10-11C (50-52F) above average, and the rest of the week will still be above average, but it will feel a lot cooler.”

The sunny Suffolk weather also missed out on a couple of other records – the warmest March 9, with temperatures of 23C (73F) clocked back in 1948, and the country’s hottest place, with Gravesend in Kent registering a temperature of 20.5C (68.9F).
