The first part of their journey was hampered by torrential downpours and strong winds.

But this four-strong group of intrepid walkers will be full of smiles tomorrow morning as they near the end of a 60-mile trek along the Suffolk coast, which is raising money for a good cause.

The quartet, which included BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Lesley Dolphin and EADT Suffolk Magazine editor Jayne Lindill, set off on their journey at 10am today from Lowestoft South Pier.

They set themselves the challenge of finishing the walk, which ends at Landguard Point in Felixstowe, within 24 hours, with the money raised going to the Suffolk Family Carers’ 8 Days a Week appeal.

Speaking this afternoon, Lesley said the terrible weather in the morning meant the members of the team could barely hear each other, but that they were still making good time.

She added: “It is going remarkably well.

“People have been coming out and thrusting money into our hands and the Just Giving site is going well, which is great.

“I think we are going to make it. We are still on target but we have a way to go.”

Jayne said: “It is going really well and people have been stopping off along the giving us money. The support has been brilliant.”

Along the journey the group, which is also made up of Discover Suffolk’s David Falk and Nick Collinson, of the county council, took in the sights of places including Southwold, Dunwich, Aldeburgh and Snape.

The family carers appeal is run in partnership with BBC Radio Suffolk and the East Anglian Daily Times.

The charity has now purchased the mobile family carer centre, which will allow the it to support to thousands of hidden family carers. The vehicle will provide a place where family carers can be supported.

As of this afternoon, the event had resulted in nearly £3,000 being donated online.
