CHILDREN have been nurturing baby chicks which have hatched as part of an education project.

Stepping Stones nursery, in Stowmarket, was greeted with a dozen new arrivals when the eggs were brought in.

The chicks have slowly been hatching with the children being able to touch and handle them.

Nursery manager, Amanda Fisk, 33, said: “All the children can see them, feed them and hold them. They have been really caring of them. They realise that life can start from an egg. The children have all been talking about them and it’s been a lot of fun. We’ve had all the groups involved – which is 50-odd children. They are here until Friday unless we can find homes for them. The children want to take them home but it’s up to the parents.

“It’s really about interaction with all the groups and getting the parents further through the door to see what the children have been doing.”

The nursery can cater for two to eight-year-olds and one of its services is to provide respite care for parents and carers of children with additional needs.

  • There is nothing vague about it, Jane. Several primary schools and nursery schools have similar schemes hatching out chicks from eggs and seeing them grow for a few weeks. Then they are returned to the meat trade's normal chicken processing chain, but of course the children are not told that. See the similar story about the piglets of Peasenhall.

  • I am somewhat concerned by the rather vague nature of what is going to happen to these little creatures once they are no longer fluffy chicks and the children become bored with them. Sadly the rescue centres are full of chickens bred to amuse children which end up unwanted and neglected. Rather foolhardy to bring creatures into the world unless they have good homes arranged in advance. Hardly teaching the children to be responsible. But then we live in a disposable society don't we?
