The heavy fog that enveloped East Anglia this morning is likely to linger into the evening as the low temperatures and still conditions remain in place.

A forecaster for Weatherquest said the fog, which formed overnight amid high humidity and freezing temperatures, would be slow in dissipating this afternoon.

“There’s not enough power in the sun or wind to move it,” said forecaster Chris Bell.

Visibility was thought to have dropped beneath 100m early this morning and was still under 300m by noon.

A band of light wind and rain moving in from the west is expected to shift the fog overnight but temperatures are likely to remain cold.

A low of -3.7C was recorded in Wattisham overnight which Mr Bell said was likely to be the region’s coldest temperatures so far this winter. Photographers on iwitness captured the icy scenes this morning with images of hoar frost - the frozen dew formed on surfaces.

For the rest of this week, and into next, Mr Bell said temperatures would remain cold enough for a ground frost despite rising slightly.

“It will feel more like winter again,” he said.
