Music fans in Ipswich are in for a treat this weekend as one of their own gives the performance of a lifetime in singing competition The Voice.

Jade Mayjean Peters from Rushmere will appear on Saturday’s episode of the nationwide talent contest.

The 21-year-old, who attended Northgate High School, took part in the blind auditions last year, and her impressive performance is now set to be televised.

Jade is no stranger to the stage, having been performing since the age of 12. “Ever since my mother pushed me into doing a competition,” she said.

“She used to hear me singing around the house and said, ‘this isn’t too shabby’.”

Since then Jade has taken her jazzy and soulful vocals around the region and further afield, performing solo and as part of a band in pubs, clubs and larger venues, even supporting the Brand New Heavies at a recent live event.

Describing her style, she said: “I’m very traditional but I’m trying to have that modern touch and trying to find myself and find a gap.”

She cites as her influences timeless stars such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, but also modern artists like Lady Gaga, whom she admires “for her stage presence and her work ethic.”

During the blind auditions Jade performed Sweet About Me by Gabriella Cilmi, but viewers will have to wait until Saturday evening to find out how she got on.

“Everybody has been very happy and proud of my performance,” she said. “I have got very supportive friends and family anyway who have always believed in me.”

Her mother Susanna, little brother Reece and best friends were there to cheer her on during the auditions.

Being on stage, she said, “felt absolutely immense, words can’t even really explain it, it was very surreal… I kind of feel a bit speechless every time I talk about it. It just felt so good being up there and getting so far after doing so much.”

Jade soon hopes to be a successful recording artist doing tours and performing as much as possible.

“Music is my plan and I don’t have a plan B,” she said. “I don’t have anything else under my belt, I just want to put everything into it and something has to come out of it. I’m a big believer in the laws of attraction and if you put so much into I think you will get something out… Anybody who wants to do something in life should just go for it.”

Expressing her gratitude for being part of the show, Jade also put a call out for the people of Ipswich to show their support.

“I’m calling on support more than ever,” she said. “I always promote all of my stuff and I always want people to be there and hope that as many can make it as possible and I want to call on people who haven’t been to my gigs to come along and get behind me because it’s great for the town.”
