A special First World War commemoration day has been held by a Suffolk museum.

The Laxfield and District Museum organised the event at the All Saints Primary School, where visitors enjoyed a frontline meal, washed down with drinks of the time and followed by ice creams made from contemporary recipes.

Stradbroke High School displayed a First World War exhibition in the school hall, inlcuding an original newsreel film from 1916 on the Battle of the Somme was also shown. The school’s band also played music from the period throughout the day.

Children enjoyed pony and trap rides, and there was a ‘living history’ First World War camp, which featured a company command post, a field kitchen and a first aid post, with a recruitment parade as well.

Those who did not wish to enlist enjoyed afternoon tea.

The day ended with a memorial sequence followed by a procession to the war memorial, where reefs were laid.

The day raised several hundreds of pounds for the Royal British Legion.
