Engineers are working round the clock over the Christmas holiday period to ensure a new rail bridge is ready on time.

The scheme is part of the Ipswich Chord railway project to create a direct link from the Port of Felixstowe to the Midlands and remove the need for freight trains to come into Ipswich first.

Reader Ken Austin took this series of photos showing the project taking place to put the new rail bridge over the river Gipping at the Boss Hall Industrial Estate into position.

The bridge will carry the line from Ipswich to Lowestoft and Felixstowe.

Mr Austin said: “This attracted a steady flow of spectators to witness this significant event in progress and watch the massive machinery in use. Work goes on continuously to ensure the line reopens on time.”

The Ipswich Chord will enable more containers from the port to be moved by rail and therefore taken off the roads.

On Christmas Eve the old bridge was removed, having had its track lifted, and will now be taken away for scrap.

On Christmas Day the new bridge, already in a position near the gap left by the old span, was slid into position and the track relaid.

The bridge, part of the East Suffolk line, should have trains running over it within a week.

The Ipswich Chord project itself is currently on target to be completed by April.

  • I think its a great step to increase the efficiency of moving and keeping all the container traffic from Felixstowe away from Ipswich. Anyone ever thought of renaming Feliixstowe to " maerskville.

  • Knowing the drivers at the Ipswich freight yard, I bet there's already a sweepstake on who's the first one to derail on the bacon curve...
