Gallery: Scouts race past the Tide Mill on the River Deben on home-made rafts during Woodbridge Regatta

Sailing enthusiasts of all ages gathered on the banks of the river Deben yesterday for a nautical celebration which dates back almost two centuries.

The Woodbridge Regatta took place along the riverside between the Tide Mill and model yacht pond offering visitors an assortment of land and water-based family fun, including yacht and dinghy races, free boat rides and canoeing demonstrations.

Regatta chairman Geoff Holdcroft said the poor weather did not deter the crowds which gave generously, raising thousands of pounds for various local causes. “There was a really great atmosphere with every generation coming out together for a lovely family day out,” he said.

The annual raft race, described as a “centrepiece” of the event, organised by the 1st Woodbridge Scouts, enjoyed record entries, with the town’s Air Cadets taking overall victory.

The famous Woodbridge and District Lions Club Duck Dive concluded the event when a flotilla of rubber ducks was released into the model yacht pond. On dry land, stalls, children’s activities including crafts and face-painting, and musical entertainment was held along the banks.

Mr Holdcroft thanked the groups who supported the event, particularly the Lions and Scouts.

  • What a huge shame that firstly this was organised on Fathers Day and secondly the weather was not brilliant. Events like this deserve more people and these 2 factors were key to a lower attendance than yrs before
