Rainfall at The Buttermarket shopping centre in Ipswich

Rainfall at The Buttermarket shopping centre in Ipswich

After a glorious spell of unusually warm temperatures and cloudless skies, the British summer seems to have returned to more familiar damp and windy conditions.

Downpours continued across the region today, following a period of unpredictably patchy weather which saw up to 100mm of rain fall in some parts of East Anglia.

Forecasters predict more showers are in store over the next few days, along with chillier temperatures and breezy winds.

Wetherquest’s Jim Bacon said: “The main feature has been that of a developing low using up the old tropical air from Hurricane Bertha. Combined with a blob of left over humid air, that can make for heavy rain.

“It’s going to bring areas of heavy rain during the day. We’ve seen heavy thundery downpours in the west of the region which are now moving eastwards.

“It will all be done and dusted by tomorrow, when we’ll be looking at a slightly fresher, breezier day with patchy showers that won’t last long because of strong winds. There will be sunny spells and temperatures will be in the low 20s or high teens.

“It should be sunny in the morning, with scattered showers becoming heavier in the afternoon.

“We’ll be seeing the temperature return to degrees near normal rather than several degrees higher.”
