Ipswich has got talent.

That was the verdict of the judges as singers, dancers and acrobats took to the stage at the Regent Theatre for the final of the town’s very own talent contest.

Eighteen of the town’s top performers thrilled the 900-strong audience as they vied for the title of Ipswich Has Got Talent winner.

Scrutinising their every move was the panel of judges – Paul Morris of Town 102, Suffolk police chief constable Simon Ash, deputy leader of the borough council Neil Macdonald, last year’s winner Natasha Staffieri and The Star’s deputy news editor Naomi Gornall.

And it was acoustic duo Studio SE, made up of Simone Dorset, 17, and Ervin Magnate, 22, who were crowned winners.

Judge Naomi Gornall, said: “There was a wide variety of acts and the standard was really high this year.

“It was a tough decision but Studio SE are worthy winners.

“Well done to all those involved.”

The runners-up in this year’s extravaganza were dance group, Qweenz and acrobatic team, Torwood Wheelers.

Ipswich Has Got Talent, now in its fourth year, is a night-time economy-focused event run by the Ipswich Community Safety Partnership and promotes a safe and fun night out for all.

It is organised by Lorraine Arthur, community safety officer at Ipswich Borough Council, and Kevin Smith, of Suffolk Constabulary’s licensing team.

Mr Smith added: “It was great, we couldn’t have asked for anything better. We had some fantastic acts and a good variety.

“The crowd loved it, they are getting to know the product now and every year we are getting bigger and better.”

In the Middle Ages Ipswich was not without schools, there is firm evidence of a grammar school as early as 1477 and probably as far back as 1399. This school received its Charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1566 and went through a number of guises before it became, what is now, Ipswich School. The school buildings are on Henley Road but have previously been in Foundation Street and Blackfriars Monastery.
