From Lowestoft to Felixstowe and Brightlingsea, readers last night had their cameras poised to record the freak tidal surge described as the worst for 60 years.

Better warning systems and sturdier sea defences meant the surge passed by relatively calmly compared to that of 1953.
There were no deaths, although 27 people were rescued after being caught out by the unusually high tides.

In Southwold, beach huts were battered by waves that were like ‘wall of water’, and the Waterfront at Ipswich flooded.

Lowestoft town centre was a no-go area and Brightlingsea was under water.
Colm O’Laoi sent photos from Essex while Beccie Biggs uploaded photos from Felixstowe at iwitness24.

Val Bond filed photos from Lowestoft and Stanley Thurgood showed the driftwood and debris left behind as the Suffolk seas subsided.
