Suffolk Police were alerted to the incident at 9.07am and the incident is being investigated by the British Transport Police (BTP).

All railway lines have now reopened but there is residual disruption around Thurston for Ipswich to Cambridge and Peterborough trains.

The collision took place at a level crossing in Cattishall and early indications are believed to suggest the incident was an accident.

The East of England Ambulance Service were also called to the scene at 9.07am and sent a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance, a paramedic officer and a land crew from the East Anglian Air Ambulance. However crews only remained on the scene for around 20 minutes.

A spokesman for the BTP said: “We were called to Cattishall foot crossing between Thurston and Bury St Edmunds on Monday, March 24 to reports of a man hit by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Suffolk Constabulary attended the incident, which was reported at 9.04am.

“Medics from the East of England Ambulance Service attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the man and inform his family.”

Train services between Ipswich and Felixstowe will be suspended until midnight.

On their website Greater Anglia said: “Owing to a fault on a train, caused by damage, after a person was struck by a train earlier near Bury St.Edmunds, the Ipswich to Felixstowe train service is suspended for the rest of today. A Rail Replacement Bus, operated by Talisman Coaches, will run instead of the train, in both directions.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding, whilst the train faults are resolved.”
