Homeowners and drivers were warned to take care in the Great Blakenham area as fire broke out in the huge landfill site in the village.

Firefighters were sent to a blaze at the site on Bramford Road in Great Blakenham.

Four crews, from Ipswich, Needham Market, and Stowmarket, were called to the incident just before 5am on Saturday.

The fire is creating a large smoke plume. Local residents are therefore being advised to keep doors and windows closed.

Motorists were also being asked to avoid the area until the smoke clears.

  • Ipswich Entrepreneur - the two are not mutually exclusive - the ski slope was going to be built in the quarry behind the landfill not on the landfill itself, which has operating for years, employing local people and generating electricity from the waste gases - coupled with the two local material recycling facilities and the incinerator that is about to come on line and the 100s of houses being built I would say the creation of jobs in the area has been more satisfied.

  • The people of Great Blakenham prefers a "huge" landfill site compared to SnOasis (which wont ever happen) that will create jobs in the area?

  • Pandy - if you can't see smoke or hear the engines you must be too far away.... anyway, you know now.
