Dusty umbrellas were dug out from the backs of coat cupboards as the rain returned to East Anglia yesterday – but is there thunder and lightning still to come?

Suffolk and north Essex have seen an extraordinary summer of Mediterranean-style temperatures coupled with unbrokered sunshine, making perfect conditions for picnics, barbeques and beer gardens.

However many of us saw the end to the heatwave yesterday – as wet weather and cooler temperatures hit Suffolk and north Essex, with heavy showers affecting parts of the region.

And while things will start off dry and pleasantly sunny today, it is looking to be a similar story this afternoon – with rumbles of thunder peppering the downpours.

Adam Dury, forecaster for Weatherquest, said the rain “could be quite heavy” with a small risk of flash flooding in some parts of the region.

With highs of 17C or 18C, it will also be fairly fresh – especially as the showers close in.

Mr Dury predicted that the region could see lows of 13C or 14C as the rain falls, before the mercury creeps up to roughly 18C in the evening.

Things are certainly looking cooler overnight, as temperatures dip to 9C or 10C – making for much more comfortable sleeping conditions.

For those missing the sunshine, the weekend will bring a welcome return of clear skies with temperatures upwards of 20C.

Mr Dury said the mercury will reach 21C or 22C again on Saturday, while Sunday will be slightly warmer at 23C or 24C.

Importantly, raincoats and umbrellas can return to the cupboard – as both days will be dry.
