A clerical assistant at Hollesley Bay open prison has been charged with helping a kidnapper she was alleged to be in a relationship with escape jail and evade capture.

Frances King, of Hall Farm Road, Melton, near Woodbridge, is accused of three offences relating to Daniel Best who absconded while serving an indeterminate sentence.

Best, formerly of Martlesham, walked out of Hollesley Bay open prison in July last year. At his Ipswich Crown Court sentencing in 2007 the judge branded him a danger to society.

King was arrested last year and released on bail pending the outcome of a Suffolk Constabulary investigation.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary said the 25-year-old was charged when she answered bail on Saturday.

King is accused of assisting Best in escaping from Hollesley Bay in July last year. It is also alleged that between July 1, 2013 and August 3, 2013, while acting as a public officer at Hollesley Bay she wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted herself by entering into a relationship with a serving prisoner.

The third accusation is that between July 5, 2013, and July 13, 2013, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse King did an act, namely assist Best’s liberty with intent to impede his apprehension or prosecution after he had escaped from prison.

King is due to make her first appearance on the charges before South East Suffolk Magistrates Court in Ipswich on June 25. She is currently on bail.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said: “A member of staff at HMPYOI Hollesley Bay has been suspended. This is now a matter for the police.”

Last August Best, 25, was jailed for eight months by Ipswich Crown Court in August last year after being re-captured.

Best, formerly of Portal Avenue, Martlesham, had admitted escaping from prison while serving in an indeterminate sentence.

He was reported as missing when he failed to turn up for morning roll-call at 7.50am on July 5.

Best had been moved to Hollesley Bay four months earlier and was on the run for a week before he was recaptured by police in Ipswich on July 12.

He was originally imprisoned aged 19 after he dragged his ex-girlfriend from a friend’s house in Newson Street, Ipswich, into a shed in nearby Anglesea Road on June 10, 2007.
