A police officer is still recovering at home after he was involved in a collision with a motorcycle.

The policeman, who has not been named, is being supported by colleagues following the incident in Aldeburgh High Street on Bank Holiday Monday.

Chief Inspector Mark Jackson, based at Lowestoft station, spoke to the officer over the phone after his released from hospital.

Ch Insp Jackson said the officer was initially taken to The James Paget Hospital, Gorleston.

“There was concern that he may have had a broken leg but I am pleased to confirm that his injuries were not as serious as at first thought,” he added.

Ch Insp Jackson praised the actions of passers-by who stopped to help the officer at the scene.

“We would like to thank members of the public on behalf of the officer involved for the help and assistance they provided at the scene until emergency services arrived,” he said.

The Lowestoft-based officer was hurt in the incident, which took place at about 4pm in Aldeburgh High Street on Monday.

According to Suffolk police, the officer had cause to request three motorcyclists to stop, but two failed to do so, and the officer was subsequently injured in a collision with one of them.

The officer was taken to hospital having sustained what was initially feared to be a serious leg injury.

However, tests confirmed his leg was not broken but badly bruised and swollen with suspected ligament damage.

The officer was discharged from hospital later that day – as two people arrested in connection with the incident were released under investigation.
