THE principal of Ipswich Academy said she would not shy away from the fact that this year’s results had been hugely disappointing – but was looking to better times ahead.

Nancy Robinson said the students who took GCSEs last summer had only spent a year at the Academy after it had been created on the site of the former Holywells High School.

She said: “They had not had the full advantage of our new ways of working here – and some were still seeing it as the old school.

“The current year 11s are in their second year of academy learning and are benefiting from that and we are confident their results will be much better.”

The controversy over the English GCSE had hit the academy hard.

“Our English results were down 17 per cent on the figure from the previous year and that was a bolt from the blue.

“We had been predicting a slight improvement on the previous year, but you can’t buck those kind of results,” she added.

Ipswich Academy is now looking ahead to better results this year and should move into its new buildings beside Gainsborough Sports Centre in the autumn.

“I cannot pretend the results were anything other than disappointing – I’ve been dreading this call! But I am sure were going in the right direction and things will improve now,” Ms Robinson said.
