A man is due to appear in court tomorrow after allegedly assaulting five police officers in the early hours of this morning.

Andrius Bernotas, of no fixed abode, Ipswich, was stopped by officers in Little Gipping Street at around 1am today.

The man was seen to be in possession of a large metal pole and when arrested he allegedly spat in the faces of five officers.

Bernotas, 24, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, five counts of assault on police officer and obstructing a police officer in the execution of duty.

He is set to appear at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning.
