University Campus Suffolk (UCS) has jumped 19 places in a league table of universities.

The institution is therefore one of the country’s biggest risers and now ranks 79th out of 116.

The league table takes into account the staff to student ratio, graduate career prospects, grades required to get a place there and how satisfied final-year students are with their course according to the results of the National Student Survey.

It also factors in a value-added score that compares students’ entry qualifications with their final degree results.

Richard Lister, UCS provost and chief executive, said: “It is extremely pleasing to see that UCS continues to rise in the Guardian League Tables.

“This improvement clearly demonstrates that as a new, modern institution we are well placed to deliver quality and value to our students, and we work closely with the UCS Students’ Union to continually develop and improve the overall student experience.

“We are particularly pleased that our emphasis on employability and enterprise ensures our students are equipped for the best possible start to their working life, and we are proud that the impact of our students, and the work that we do, is making a valuable and lasting contribution to the region and in particular to the communities in which we are based.”

Individual subjects are also moving up their respective league tables, including business management and marketing (up 41 places), English (up 27 places), nursing and midwifery (up 18 places), sociology (up 10 places), computer science (up 9 places), and psychology (up 2 places).

Subject areas making the league table for the first time at UCS include health professions, bioscience, and hospitality, event management, and tourism which ranks in the top six.

  • Well done to the staff and students. Hopefully the application for degree awarding powers will be successful - given these rankings it looks highly likely! And then next year Ipswich & Suffolk will finally have it's independent University. A sign that things CAN happen in the town when all the organisations work together successfully. This should be used as a model for the 9-point plan to improve the town centre to show what can be achieved
