The East of England Co-op submitted a proposal for a new shop in at the site of the Three Jolly Sailors pub on Handford Road, days after their store in Norwich Road was closed.

The site of a former pub in west Ipswich could be used to create a new Co-op convenience store, if a proposal from the company is given the green light.

Plans for the area in Handford Road, where the Three Jolly Sailors used to stand, have been submitted to the borough council, just days after the East of England Co-op announced it would be closing its store in Norwich Road.

A spokesman for the firm said the recent closure would not have a bearing on the current application and that they estimate the shop would create 26 jobs, which will be a mix of full and part time.

Nick Denny, executive for property at the East of England Co-op, said: “The East of England Co-op has resubmitted a planning application to create a food store in Handford Road, following extensive discussions with the planning authority.

“It has been our intention to create a new foodstore in the location since the site was acquired in 2012 prior to any decisions being made on the Norwich Road store.”

In a design statement to the borough, planners have been told that the convenience store will include a sales area, preparation area, staff amenities, cold stores and warehouse storage.

A report added: “The redevelopment of this site will contribute to the wider regeneration aspirations for this area of Ipswich.”
