Ipswich: Councillor Bill Quinton appointed mayor

Cllr Bill Quinton is made mayor of Ipswich (again).

Archant

The new civic head of Ipswich has been officially appointed at a mayor-making ceremony.

Councillor Bill Quinton was chosen by all 48 members of Ipswich Borough Council at a full meeting last night.

Mr Quinton held the post 26 years ago in 1988-1989, and since then has held a number of senior council posts including chairman of the planning and development committee.

His wife Barbara will be the new Mayoress, while last year’s mayor councillor Hamil Clarke became deputy mayor.

Mr Quinton has chosen three charities to support during his term of office – Suffolk Family Carers, the RSPCA and the Alzheimers Society – with a theme of “Caring and Sharing”.

He told the meeting: “It is both a great honour and a privilege to serve Ipswich as Mayor and Mayoress and we are both looking forward to the year ahead and meeting many people from all walks of life.

“There are many unsung heroes working hard in our town without thanks or recognition. We hope during the year to remedy some of this.

“I would like to thank you for the confidence you have shown in me. It makes me feel humble but determined to do the very best for the people of Ipswich.”

  • Interesting that while Labourites (i.e. champagne socialists) continue to destroy our own BritishEnglish heritage and culture, these elected (on a poor turnout) Labour peeps really love the traditional garb whether it is mayoral chains or Lordly ermine. These hypocrites haven't a clue about the native working class and how Labour's newly imported workforce from eastern Europe, Asia and elsewhere compete with the people who once supported the Labour movement. Disgusting characters.

  • Indeed Mike. No one should be able to hold the title of mayor twice. No one should be a councillor for more than 4 years... or at a stretch 8 years.

  • Once again a mayor who has previously served are we really that short of people to fill the position or has council nepotism reached new levels.
