A man who went on a Christmas drinking session with friends in Ipswich smashed a pub window after being told he would no longer be served, a court has heard.

Antony Waller was handed a fine and ordered to pay compensation after pleading guilty to

causing criminal damage at

The Rep pub, in Tower Street, when he appeared at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Rosalind Cappleman, prosecuting, told the court the 27-year-old, of Kingston Road, had gone

into the town centre with friends on December 23 to celebrate Christmas.

She said: “They had

been drinking and they

then attended The Rep public house where they continued to drink.

“Staff became aware of his intoxicated state and said they were going to stop selling him alcohol.

“He then got in an argument with a friend of his and was ejected from the pub.

“Later a bang and smashing of glass was heard.”

The court was told that police were then called to the scene and Waller was found a short while later outside the Robert Ransome pub. He had cuts to his right hand and forearm.

Addressing magistrates before he was sentenced, Waller said: “I know it is my fault and I am sorry for it.”

Waller was given a £150 fine and was also ordered to pay £100 compensation for the damage he caused.

He was also ordered to pay £80 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

  • @Ipsman: this is nothing to do with doing "something whilst drunk that you later regret". This is a thug who smashes windows when he can't get his way. It wasn't the alcohol that made him do it, it was his personality. Hard-working bar staff deserve not to have their lives made harder by people like him.

  • Can we have a photo of him, rather than the pub please? Only fair that staff of other pubs have the opportunity to recognise him and make sure he doesn't get served again.

  • beerlover - Are you suggesting that he is banned from all pubs for life because of this one incident? I'm not justifying his act but you seem a tad harsh. Have you never done something whilst drunk that you later regret?
