Ipswich: Gummer nominated for “pin-up” accolade

THE town’s MP has been nominated as “pin-up or the year” by the Taxpayers’ Alliance after his successful campaign to get the government to send out a breakdown of where their money goes to every taxpayer.

Ben Gummer proposed the change early in the year, and it was taken up by Chancellor George Osborne in his March budget.

It means that tax statements will be sent to everyone from 2014 giving a breakdown of where the money they pay to the government is spent.

Mr Gummer said he was looking forward to the first statements being sent out: “The ministers were happy to look at implementing the proposals and it was just a case of working out how to make it work.

“I’m not sure that the nomination in itself is that important to me – the important thing is the work we did on this earlier in the year.”

In making the nomination, the TPA said it was in recognition of: “His efforts to promote tax transparency, in particular for pushing the idea – adopted by the Government in the 2012 Budget – of an annual tax statement in which people get told how much they have paid in tax and how the Government has spent it.”

  • I am not a fan of the Tories and I think they will be out at the next General Election, with Mr Gummer probably losing his seat in Ipswich. But he is a very good MP and I hope every effort is made to ensure he stays in (or soon re-enters) Parliament. People of Mr Gummer's calibre could help restore faith in politicians.
