A HERO taxi driver who gave CPR to a motorist involved in a dramatic crash near the Waterfront, has today been nominated for a Stars of Suffolk award.

Kevin Robey, of Rands Way in Ipswich, was taking a passenger to the JLS concert in Chantry Park in August when he witnessed a car crash into a set of railings near Neptune Square.

Mr Robey, of Beeline Cars, said the driver of the car, a man in his 60s, was unconscious and stopped breathing, after suffering a suspected heart attack.

The driver stopped breathing several times and Mr Robey, a former emergency medical technician with the ambulance service, had to give him CPR while waiting for the emergency services to arrive at the scene.

Mr Robey said: “I got myself into ambulance service mode. I wasn’t a taxi driver then – I was acting as an ambulance medic.”

Speaking at the time of the incident, a Suffolk police spokesman said the motorist was still undergoing treatment but had been talking.

Mr Robey’s nomination comes just a few days before the final deadline for this year’s Stars of Suffolk Awards – which aim to highlight the good work of Suffolk’s unsung heroes.

Among the categories for the awards are carer of the year, fire service person of the year, team of the year and unsung hero/heroine of the year.

The closing date for nominations for Stars of Suffolk is November 23 and the awards night will take place at Suffolk New College on January 18.

To nominate your star, visit www.starsofsuffolk.org.uk to complete an online entry or pick up a form from schools, libraries, council offices and community centres.
