Funds for the Stroke Association in East Anglia should be boosted by more than £10,000 after a team of brave volunteers took a bold step for the charity.

They abseiled down from the 13th floor of The Mill on Ipswich Waterfront during a day-long fundraising marathon.

Organiser George Burroughs said 36 people had booked to take part in the event – but a few extra could also be fitted in if they were able to make the minimum sponsorship contribution.

Among those who took part in the event was Ipswich MP Ben Gummer, who could not resist the challenge when he visited the fundraisers.

The oldest abseiler was 73, and the event was a tough challenge for all the abseilers because they were not coming down a solid wall – they had to bounce from balcony to balcony.

Mr Burroughs said: “Our regional office is based in Suffolk so we wanted to do something here – and this is the tallest building in the region so we are delighted they gave us permission for this.”

One of the first participants was volunteer Clare Brown who was very impressed by the views from the top.

“You can see the Orwell Bridge and right across to the maternity block at the hospital. I was all for it, but when I leaned over the edge, I did wonder why I was doing it!”
