Police in Ipswich last night pledged to take action against arsonists who have caused damage in a town estate through a string of offences.

Late-night patrols are being stepped up by officers in a bid to deter the firebugs, who have struck several times in just a few weeks in streets around the Brook estate, in south west Ipswich.

Most of the incidents reported have involved items such as bins and trees, but police have said an outbuilding, a car, and other property have been damaged as a result of the attacks, which are being linked.

Temporary Sergeant Joseph Askham, from Ipswich South West Safer Neighbourhood Team, said there have been six arson incidents since June 14.

He added: “This has been set as one of our police priorities to address.

“Arson is a very dangerous crime as it could also result in a property catching alight, endangering the lives of those within.

“These crimes are being taken seriously and we will look to identify and deal robustly with those responsible.

“Patrols in the area are being increased and officers are talking with local pupils at school to educate them about the dangers of playing with matches.”

Fires have been reported in Ellenbrook Road, Fountains Road, Brookview, Annbrook Road and Chantry Green. On Monday between 11.30pm and midnight, there was another incident reported in Dale Hall lane.

A spokesman for the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service added: “We can confirm we are working with our colleagues, Suffolk police, on this investigation.”

Anybody who has witnessed one of the incidents or has seen any individuals acting suspiciously is asked to call police on 101.
