An Ipswich man who suffered multiple serious injuries during a car crash has thanked emergency services for potentially saving his life.

Nigel, who does not want his last name published, sustained a broken pelvis, a broken wrist, a broken collarbone and fractured ribs during a collision involving two cars and a lorry on the A140 in Mendlesham, close to the village airfield, at around 1.50am on September 17.

The 53-year-old, who does not remember anything from the crash, is still in Ipswich Hospital receiving treatment.

“I want to thank all the crews who turned up on the scene,” he said. “If it weren’t for their hard work I wouldn’t be here now.”

Although the circumstances of the collision are not clear, police have confirmed it involved a Skoda Fabia, which Nigel was driving, a Mercedes ML270 and a lorry.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free Nigel from his vehicle.

After an initial admission to Ipswich Hospital, Nigel was transferred to the trauma unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and later returned to Ipswich for ongoing care.

No one else was thought to have been seriously hurt as a result of the crash

“It hasn’t sunk in just yet,” Nigel said. “My head is all over the place and I don’t know which way to go.”

Nigel had been to a country and western concert on the evening of September 16 and had dropped a friend off home just half an hour before the crash happened.

“I did have a bit of a dip the other week because it hit me that someone could have been killed,” Nigel added.

A professional lorry driver, Nigel hopes to get home and back on the road as soon as he is well and able.

Nigel also thanked the hospital staff who have aided his recovery, adding: “I can’t fault them – I don’t know how they are putting up with me.”

Among the resources sent to the scene of the crash were three fire engines and two ambulances.
