White lines to stop people parking on a road in Ipswich have mysteriously appeared in the last few days.

But those living on Leopold Road say they’re only going to cause more aggravation in a place where people are very territorial about parking.

Cars park along both sides of the road as most houses don’t have off-street parking. Apparently there is competition amongst residents to get a space for their car near their homes.

And now it would seem someone has taken matters into their own hands by painting lines on the road.

Lyndsay Forbes lives just along from the puzzling new lines.

She said: “There’s quite a lot of possessive parking goes on. It’s a busy road and there’s loads of cars and you don’t often get a space.

“I don’t know who’s put the white lines there. I’ve never noticed them before so they’ve obviously been put there recently.

“You often hear people outside sounding their horns at each other. It’s quite an issue on this road.

“From what I’ve seen of the street I think it’ll create more agro.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: “They appeared Friday afternoon. I saw masking tape and a brown bin there.

“I suppose it’s best left up to council rather than taking matters into your own hands.”

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council added: “We’d like to remind residents that altering or adding road markings to the public highway is illegal, and we ask that those considering it should refrain from doing so.

“The relevant area manager for the road in question has been informed and will investigate in due course.”

People wanting to lodge a formal complaint for highway-related issues can do so through the ‘report a problem’ tab on www.suffolk.gov.uk or by calling 0845 6066171.
