Detectives have issued a description of a rape suspect after an 18-year-old woman was attacked in an Ipswich alleyway.

Officers were alerted to the town centre assault early on Easter Sunday by the Town Pastors after they were approached by a member of the public who had in turn spoken to a distressed woman.

The teenager, who comes from Ipswich, reported being raped by a man in the alleyway leading off from a car-park off Lower Brook Street at about 2.35am.

Specialist sex crimes officers based at Landmark House in Ipswich have been trawling closed circuit television footage in the town centre following the incident.

They have been assisted in their inquiry by colleagues on Suffolk Constabulary’s major investigation team.

The man police want to speak to is described as black, aged about 40 years old, between 5ft 10in and 5ft 11in, of average build, with short and straight black hair, and with a white/grey beard coming down from his side burns and a deep voice.

He was wearing a long-sleeved, dark blue denim top.

Police are also appealing to anyone who was outside the Best Kebab Shop on Dogs Head Street between 2am and 2.45am to come forward as they may have information that can help the investigation.

Officers would also like to speak with the woman who initially alerted the Town Pastors to the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ipswich Gemini Team on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
