TRIBUTES have been paid to a “jocular and gregarious” former pub landlord.

Clive Goodall, former landlord of the Maypole in Ipswich and Moon & Mushroom in Swilland, died in hospital on December 6, aged 69.

Clive met Adrienne in 1971, when she was landlady of the Oxborrows Hotel, and they moved to Burstall with Adrienne’s daughter Laura.

In 1974, the same year their son Drew was born, Clive became the youngest landlord in Ipswich at the Maypole – where he started the first pool league in Ipswich.

Adrienne said: “He was keen on all sports – darts, crib, quoits – and was strongly competitive. He became a well-known figure around Ipswich, smoking a huge pipe and eating tindaloo curries every day.”

The couple stayed at the Maypole for 15 years before moving to the White Horse at Tattingstone.

After two years they bought their own pub – the Half Moon at Swilland.

“It was badly run down,” Adrienne said. “The place was totally pulled apart to create the Moon & Mushroom as it stands now. The mushroom bit of the name was arrived at in our quiet times, when we would get up at 6am to go mushrooming in Rendlesham Forest.

“He became keenly interested in them and was soon selling them to the local and even London restaurants.”

The Moon & Mushroom only sold beers from micro breweries and in 2002 it won the Star’s Pub of the Year competition.

Clive and Adrienne retired to the south of France after the award win.

“Although unable to master the ability to speak French,” Adrienne said. “He could still befriend many with his jocular and gregarious manner.

“He left us without warning, although we knew he was not well, we did not imagine it would be the end as he quietly slipped away.”
