He is Ipswich’s iconic mammoth who caused a storm when it emerged he did not have a name.
But yesterday, the replica animal officially became Wool-I-Am, as he was formally named at a meeting of Ipswich Museum’s Mini Mammoth club – the group which chose the giant’s moniker.
The search for a name began when it was mentioned of the Radio 2 Breakfast show and stand-in host Sara Cox asked listeners to help.
A social media storm was sparked and thousands of people sent in their ideas and a shortlist was then sent to the High Street-based museum.
Wool-I-Am was then selected by the Mini Mammoths, a group of under-5s who regularly take part in activities at the museum.
Members of the group were joined by representatives of the council during their group yesterday to officially give the mammoth its name.
Speaking prior to the naming, Gordon Mole, Ipswich Borough Council’s head of culture, said: “It is great that there was so much interest, it shows that the museum is very important to many people.”
