A man who sleeps rough in a container has appeared in court charged with burgling an Ipswich convenience story and stealing cigarettes, cash, and tobacco totalling £1,000.

Nicholas Balderstone, 22, of no fixed abode, and his co-accused Max Walker, 24, of Ogilvie Almshouses, Church Lane, Aldringham, near Leiston, are alleged to have broken into McColls in Maidenhall Green, early on Monday morning.

Walker is also charged with possessing a knife in a public place.

The pair made their first appearances in relation to the allegations before South East Suffolk Magistrates Court in Ipswich.

Their cases were committed to Ipswich Crown Court.

Balderstone’s next court appearance is due to take place on February 13. He was released on conditional bail until then. As part of the conditions he must reside in Bunyan Close, Ipswich, and observe a curfew.

Walker was remanded in custody until his next scheduled appearance on February 21.
