An angry Ipswich mum-of-two has urged the alleged hit-and-run driver who knocked her 13-year-old son off his bike, leaving him in hospital, to come forward and claim responsibility for their actions.

Josh Mayhew is recovering at home with a concussion two days after the crash at the junction of Freehold Road and Bloomfield Street.

Police are hunting the driver of the blue car which is said to have fled the scene without stopping at around 2.15pm on Sunday.

Mum Lisa Mayhew, 41, said: “It is absolutely disgusting that anyone can do that.

“They should have stayed at the scene. I know I would have done.

“They know what they have done. Please, come forward and take responsibility for what you have done.

“It was a child who could have been seriously injured.”

Josh, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), was put on a stretcher and taken to Ipswich Hospital with head and neck injuries.

He was X-rayed and discharged after spending four hours at the hospital.

Ms Mayhew, of Cauldwell Hall Road, was told about the crash by a friend. “She called me and told me what happened and I just panicked,” she said.

“I drove over and saw him being put on the stretcher. He said he was more concerned about his bike than his head, which had a cut at the back.”

The teenager went to school at Kesgrave High School yesterday but concerned staff told Ms Mayhew he was feeling dizzy and sick. She took him to hospital for a check-up before he went back home to recover.

Detectives are linking the crash to an incident in which a 57-year-old man was involved in a collision with a blue car in Felixstowe Road at around 2pm on Sunday.

He told officers he was cycling along the road when he turned in to Derby Road and collided with the car that failed to give way.

The driver left without stopping. The cyclist sustained cuts and bruising.

Call police on 101 with information.
