A former BBC worker has been presented with a medal by the town mayor in honour of her 107th birthday.

Ida Mantica, who lives in the Chrissian residential home in Woodbridge Road, celebrated her milestone on Saturday with a party with family, friends and Ipswich mayor Bill Quinton.

Ida was born in London on July 19, 1907, and was the eldest of four – brother Eric and sisters Mavis and Doris.

She won a scholarship to Southall County School in London where she played the piano, having learnt as a young girl, for the dancers.

Having enjoyed a varied careers, Ida worked for the BBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Metropolitan Police and was an ambulance driver during the Second World War.

She also volunteered at West London Hospital which was where she met her late husband Arthur.

Lauren Cahill, the manager of Chrissian, said: “She bumped into Arthur outside the hospital and he recognised her as going to school with his sister.”

Ida, who used to live in the Isle of Wight, relocated to Ipswich to be closer to her niece Jo Johnson who attended Saturday’s party.

Miss Cahill added: “She received a card from the Queen, a telegram from the Department for Work and Pensions and a medal and pot plant from the mayor which she was very pleased with.

“She really enjoyed herself at the party. She is a very remarkable lady.”
