Paul Cummings came off his bike at low speed in the Tower Ramparts bus station on Sunday.

The recently reopened station has a new surface which some have said is too slippery.

As Mr Cummings rode away from the Robert Ransome pub through the station his rear wheel spun and the bike slipped from beneath him.

But according to a witness at the scene this wasn’t the first incident since the new surface was laid.

Mr Cummings, who lives in Camden Road, said: “A bus driver told me four other motorbikes had gone over there.

“After they picked my bike up I saw a cyclist come off too.

“In my view it’s got to be addressed quickly before someone on a bike comes out of there and ends up sliding under a bus.”

Mr Cummings spent yesterday off work to recover from bruised ribs and a swollen hand sustained during the incident.

He has also had to have repairs made to his motorbike because of the damage it suffered to bodywork, mirrors and the engine.

Mr Cummings said: “I’ve lost my motorbike and my helmet which is very expensive.

“My motorbike was my main form of transport,” added the 60-year-old, who has been riding motorbikes for over 20 years.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said: “We’re aware of some issues with the road surface on the bus lanes at Tower Ramparts bus station, and have instructed the contractor responsible to address the issue as a matter of urgency.

“In the meantime we have commissioned signs to warn those using the area and will continue to monitor the situation.”
