A cordon has been put in place after a large hole appeared in the middle of an Ipswich street.

Highways bosses believe the incident, in Cavendish Street, is the result of a collapsed deep sewer however a full investigation needs to take place before the reason behind the opening is known.

Metal fencing has now been placed around the hole and that part of the road has been closed to traffic.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council, said: “The safety of the public is our paramount concern, we’ve instructed our contractors to close Cavendish Street either side of the hole, and set up signed diversionary routes.

“Arrangements are now being made for appropriately qualified operatives to undertake the necessary specialist investigations.

“In the meantime, we’d ask residents and other road users to be mindful of the road closure and respect the signs in place, they’re there for public safety.”
