THE future of one of the town’s best-known buildings could become clearer next week.

Members of the borough’s planning and development committee are to consider proposals to redevelop the former Cliff Quay brewery and surrounding land at its meeting on March 6.

The application was deferred at the February meeting to give developers Pigeon the chance to make minor alterations to the proposals – reducing the size of the new development to go next to the former brewery.

Pigeon spokesman Clive Thompson said he remained hopeful that the scheme would be approved by the borough.

He said: “There have been a few minor changes, and we are hopeful that there will be a positive recommendation by the officers.”

The developers felt the proposals would “bookend” the town’s waterfront development – being at the opposite end from the new Tesco in Grafton Way, which is due to be discussed by planners at the end of March.

The Cliff Quay development would see the former brewery building itself converted into a community hub with shops and exhibition spaces underneath a lecture theatre.

The rest of the development would include a new supermarket, flats and a new hotel and health club with an access to Landseer Road.
