Ipswich: Delayed Travel Ipswich roadworks at Barrack Corner finally nearing completion

Work to install a new cycle crossing at Barrack Corner on Norwich Road in Ipswich should finally be finished this week after taking twice as long as planned.

Construction work at the site – part of the £21 million Travel Ipswich project – started on April 14 and was due to be completed within five weeks.

However the work has now run into its tenth week after contractors encountered unforeseen problems. A spokesman for the county council said that while there had been a delay, this had not interfered with traffic using Norwich Road.

The new traffic lights will be synchronised with the existing pedestrian crossing outside the Co-op about 100 metres away to ensure that vehicles are not stopped twice.

Engineers were confident that the work would be completed this week – allowing the creation a new cycle route from Portman Road to north Ipswich.

  • Whether we think the Travel Ipswich was a good idea or not ... please remember that most if not all the money came from central government, not our local coffers.

  • A complete waste of time and money. I do despair over this Travel Ipswich plan...lets spend money on something that does not alter anything in any shape or form.

  • Can I point out that the headline of this article does ot help Ipswich, the same as Mr Newmans comments that whilst the work continued Ipswich was shut please do not come to Ipswich. To give the builders credit Norwich Rd has never been closed or restricted and we have got through everyday no problem. It would help if people who communicate to the public get the information right.

  • Two crossings within 100 yards of each other, who on earth thought of that one. This will cause yet more delays for motorists but hey, isn't that what IBC and SCC want. The £21 million pound project is a joke and would probably have paid to repair all of the pot holes in and around Ipswich.
