Ipswich: Elderly woman’s purse stolen after man entered her Cemetery Road home saying he needed to check oven

14:30 27 January 2014

Police are advising residents to be alert after an elderly woman had her purse stolen during a distraction burglary in Ipswich.

The woman had allowed a man to enter her home on Cemetery Road after he knocked on the door saying he needed to check the oven.

Later that day, Saturday, January 25, the woman noticed her purse containing cash and cards had been stolen.

There is no description of the offender.

Police are reminding residents to follow the below advice:

- Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers and do not to let anyone in if you are not comfortable with who they are and verify their identity with the company they work for.

- If in doubt, keep them out, particularly if you’re on your own.

- Ask them to make an appointment or come back later when someone else is around. Genuine callers won’t mind.

- If you are suspicious, report the incident to the police immediately by calling 999. You may help prevent them from burgling someone else.
