The injured woman is also said to be from Ipswich and in her 20s.

She is understood to have initially been taken to West Suffolk Hospital.

Although an air ambulance was called to the scene near Haughley junction, which is between Haughley and Old Newton, the woman was taken to the Bury St Edmunds hospital by land ambulance.

She is currently being treated at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The British Transport Police (BTP) have said her injuries are said not to be life-threatening.

The suspect, who is aged 37, is currently in custody at an undisclosed location. Officers have not said whether the man is in hospital or being held at a police investigation centre.

However, it is believed he was also taken to hospital after the incident which occurred yesterday evening.

A BTP spokesman said: “We were called to Spikes Lane crossing in Stowmarket on Sunday, February 23, to a report of a person hit by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Suffolk Police attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 6.16pm.

“Medics from the East of England Ambulance Service also attended and treated a woman in her 20s for injuries to her head and pelvis.

“She was then transferred to a local hospital, where she remains, and her injuries are believed to be serious but not life-threatening.

“On arrival at the scene, officers arrested a 37-year-old man from Ipswich on suspicion of attempted murder. He currently remains in custody.

“The incident is currently being treated as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident, including how the woman came to be on the tracks.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 362 of the 23/02/14.

The incident caused the line to be closed and trains to be delayed and cancelled until the line was reopened at around 9pm.

A cyclist rode through a red light and turned left while I was walking the dog this week. It was 6.20am, there was no other traffic so no risk but, officially, the cyclist had broken the law.
