Ipswich: Health and Safety Executive investigate after worker seriously injured by large stone

INQUIRIES are ongoing today after a worker suffered serious injuries when a large stone fell on his leg.

Emergency services and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were called to Collins and Curtis Masonry in Greenwich Close, Ipswich, at 10.25am yesterday.

Initial reports said a man in his 30s had suffered serious injuries after a large stone crushed his leg at the firm, which makes gravestones.

It is understood that the incident was initially thought to have been life-threatening due to the amount of blood the injured man had lost.

However, a spokesman for Suffolk police said “A 30-year-old man was injured when a large stone fell on his leg.

“It is thought he has suffered a possible leg fracture. His injuries are possibly life-changing.”

One concerned resident contacted The Ipswich Star after hearing a man “yelling with pain”.

He said: “I was at one of the properties adjacent to where it happened and all of a sudden I heard this chap yelling with pain.

“He sounded like he was in so much pain and agony because it went on for a long time.

“For a while we thought that they were messing around because there is a lot of banter in those offices.

“When I left there was an ambulance hurtling down to where it had happened so we know someone had been seriously hurt.

“There were two ambulances, four police cars and the Health and Safety Executive people were there for most of the day.”

A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were alerted to a man who had suffered serious traumatic leg injuries.

“He was taken to Ipswich Hospital for further treatment.”

A spokesman for the HSE said: “HSE are aware and we are making initial inquiries.”

No-one at Collins and Curtis Masonry was available to comment.
