An Ipswich marina managed to overcome the worst floods they had seen in over 40 years.

Staff and clients at Fox’s Marina, on The Strand, spent most of the night working to make sure damage was kept to a minimum.

Ralph Catchpole, services manager at Fox’s Marina, said: “The water’s still there. There’s about five or six foot of water on the meadow.”

“I’ve been here for 42 years, and I’ve never seen water in the meadow before.”

Mr Catchpole said there were a few scratches and four vehicles underwater, one of which was completely submerged.

The time that the weather struck didn’t make things any easier.

Mr Catchpole said: “It was difficult to see, but the lads did a fantastic job.

“The lads shifted 40 to 50 boats in three hours. The water came over the sea wall and it sounded like a waterfall.”

“The noise was horrendous. There was a foot of water within minutes.”

But it could have been worse. Mr Catchpole was thankful for the lack of wind, calling it their ‘saviour’. He said: “The saving grace was the little wind that we had in the evening.”

  • Ralph, if you've been there for 42 years then you had plenty of time to remove those 4 vehicles. A PHD in basic common sense is perhaps required!
