Ipswich/Mildenhall: Woman weeps in court as she describes alleged sexual assault by former speedway champion Michael Lee

A woman wept in court as she described how former speedway world champion Michael Lee tried to put a black bin bag over her head before allegedly raping her.

The woman told a jury at Ipswich Crown Court she had been in a toilet when Lee appeared at the door.

She claimed Lee pushed her so she was wedged between the toilet and the wall causing her to hit her side. “I couldn’t really get up,” she said.

She claimed Lee then tried to put a black bin bag over her head.

“I was pushing him away saying: ‘Please don’t put it over my head’,” said the woman, who gave her evidence behind a screen.

Eventually Lee let her get up but shortly afterwards he allegedly raped her.

“I was too scared not to do what he wanted,” she said.

Crying as she gave her evidence, the woman said she thought Lee would kill her if she did not have sex with him.

She said she asked Lee to stop and told him he was hurting her but he “just carried on”.

Lee, 55, of Worlington, Mildenhall, denies raping the woman and assaulting her in December 2012.

He also denies two offences of sexually assaulting another woman in 2011.

Charles Myatt, prosecuting, alleged the two offences of sexual assault took place at an end of season speedway presentation evening.

He claimed Lee put his hand up a woman’s dress and when she turned round she allegedly saw him with a “large grin on his face and laughing”.

The alleged victim attended the event at a pub in Worlington with her partner and initially thought it was him touching her.

She was anxious not to cause a scene and decided to leave but as she did so Lee allegedly came up behind her and did the same thing again and said she had “nice thighs”, said Mr Myatt.

After his arrest in February last year Lee denied sexually assaulting the woman in the pub and said he had given her “ a friendly squeeze on the bottom”.

He denied assaulting or raping the other woman and described the allegations as “pure fabrication”.

The trial continues.
