Suffolk’s newest care home is being officially opened today – providing a new residence for frail older people from Ipswich and south east Suffolk.
Asterbury Place on Aster Road in Ipswich will replace the nearby Hawthorn Road home and Angel Court in Hadleigh. There are 80 rooms for 80 residents – and the first will be moving in on Monday.
It has been built by Care UK and is one of 10 new residential homes being built across the county to provide homes for 690 frail older people at a cost of £60 million.
All of the homes will be fully equipped to look after residents suffering from dementia, and a key element is that they will be able to cope with people as their health deteriorates.
Care UK took over the county council’s own care homes two years ago, and all the rooms at Asterbury Place are likely to be allocated to those placed there by the county.
The new home is likely to provide about 80 jobs, many of whom will be transferring from Hawthorn Drive or Angel Court.
Phillip Steyn from Care UK said the Asterbury Place was designed to be able to be a home for life: “Once people have moved here they should be able to stay here. There is provision for nursing care which can be stepped up as people get older and their needs become greater.”
As well as the residential care, the home also has the Asterbury Club which will provide day care facilities for older people who continue to live in the community.
Suffolk County Council cabinet member for adult care Dr Alan Murray visited the home just before the official opening.
He said: “This is the kind of high-quality care that is needed as the number of older people increases and more and more need dementia care.”
The home is being officially opened at 2pm today and will then be open to the public until 7pm to give local people the chance to see what it has to offer.
It will also be open from 10am to 4pm tomorrow – and there is an understanding dementia event on Thursday, July 17.
