Police were called at around 12.15am to the town centre as the men had been seen on the roof.

The force helicopter was also needed and used its thermal imaging camera to locate the men.

Officers arrived at the scene but found no signs of a break-in. A force spokesman said “nothing untoward” had been going on.

“Police found the three males who said they were just looking at stars,” she said.

“We took them home and gave them suitable words of advice.

  • The most expensive piece of kit in the police budget is being used to target sky-watchers? That is just so unreal but suggests we still have a public sector which is out of control. More cuts needed BUT (my emphasis) in the right places. Can an aspirational Star journo get a FOI report on how many times the chopper was used and how many times the use was proportional and cost-effective? Just asking!

  • Is it now illegal to be on a rooftop at night, star watching, if you happen to be interested in astronomy? And will you be hunted by police with a helicopter and thermal imaging equipment if you are? Staggering police overreaction. I think we should be told how much it has cost the taxpayer.
