Detectives have branded thief who burgled a vulnerable man’s Ipswich home twice in six hours yesterday as “despicable”.

The incidents occurred in central Ipswich, although the road name where the thefts occurred is being withheld so as no to identify where the 59-year-old lives.

The first burglary happened when a man knocked at the door of the victim’s property around 7am.

The occupant answered and let the man in, who claimed he was looking at his meters.

The man then ran out of the property. It is believed an amount of cash and a pack of cigarettes were stolen. This was not reported to police at the time.

Later that day around 1pm, there was another knock at the door.

A man said he was collecting for a charity went inside the premises. The victim got out his wallet, which the offender took from him and ran out of the property towards Hervey Street.

Police were then informed.

It is believed the offender from both incidents was the same person.

He is described as a white man, mid to late thirties in age, of a slim build, approximately 5’10” to 6 foot tall, had short brown hair, stubble and was wearing a light coloured jacket and trousers. He got into a dark coloured Audi A3.

Detective Inspector Barry Byford from Ipswich said: “Incidents like these are despicable as they involve preying on vulnerable victims who are usually simply being helpful or kind-hearted by letting people into their home. Sadly this elderly gentleman was targeted twice in one day.

“I want to reassure members of the public that we are putting every effort into catching these criminals, who will be held responsible for their actions.

“I would like to appeal to any potential victims out there; ensure you ask for official ID before allowing them into your home.

“If you have any concerns at all, do not let them into your home or call the company they claim to be from. A genuine caller will not mind you doing this. I would also ask that anyone with elderly or vulnerable friends or relatives passes on this advice.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call at Ipswich CID on 101.

  • If anyone ever asks me if they can check the meter or want a light or ask if I`ve got the time it`s always been my policy to knock them spark out. It works for me.
