A Suffolk police officer is to appear in court to be charged following an alleged road rage incident in Ipswich.

The police constable, who was off-duty at the time, has been reported for summons to court in relation to allegations of dangerous driving and assault.

At this stage no date has been set for his appearance in court.

In addition it is not known whether the first hearing will be scheduled to be heard in Suffolk or Norfolk.

The 53-year-old will be formally charged with dangerous driving and assault when he makes his appearance in court.

The officer is stationed at Suffolk Constabulary’s Martlesham headquarters.

The constabulary has said the constable has not been suspended from his duties.

Richard Jones, a spokesman for the force, said: “A 53-year-old man from the Ipswich area has been reported for summons to court following an incident involving a cyclist and a motorist, which happened on Friday, February 14, along Norwich Road in Ipswich.

“The man, who is an employee with Suffolk Police, was off-duty at the time of the incident.”

An investigation began after an allegation was made by a 25-year-old cyclist from the Whitehouse estate in Ipswich who reported he had been knocked off his bike by a motorist.

The incident took place near Coe’s outfitters in Norwich Road at around 2.15pm.

At the time the pair were both understood to have been heading away from the town centre.

After the alleged collision a physical altercation is said to have occurred. An inquiry began after a complaint was made and Suffolk Constabulary’s Professional Standards Department was informed.

In February a police statement read: “The matter will be fully investigated to see if any criminal offences have taken place and where necessary appropriate action will be taken.”
